Expectations of ALL STUDENTS
Class Description : US History is a North Carolina state required course. This is a semester long course in the block schedule (which will be the work of a year long course). Therefore, a lot of work, time, energy, and positive attitudes are a necessity. It is imperative that you keep up with your class assignments and do all of your work when it is given. If you fail this class, it is because you chose to fail. To prevent this from happening, follow all directions, do your work on time, and ask for help if you need it.
Arrival & Departure
from the Classroom
* Take care of all personal business (bathroom, locker, phone calls, water,
sharpening pencils, etc) and other school business (counselor, administrator,
other teachers, etc) on your own time (before and after school, lunch).
* You should be in your seat, working on the assignment on the board or
overhead before the bell rings.
* If you are not in your seat, you will be counted tardy. This is your warning.
Therefore, your first offense will result in ASD. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
* If you were absent for any reason, you must have a note. I will sign it
and return it to you. If I don’t have a note after two days, you will
be referred for skipping.
? When you return from your absence, check the board or website to see what
you missed. Yes, we always do things when you are absent!!!!
? Get your missed notes from a classmate!
? Any missed handouts are in the make-up notebook with your name on it!
? Schedule a time on the calendar to make up tests or quizzes.
? If you have homework to turn in the day you come back, place it in the
homework tray, like you would any other day!
? I will not hunt you down to complete your assignments. Take responsibility!!
* The teacher always dismisses class, not the bell. WAIT for the teacher
to dismiss you verbally!!!
Materials and supplies
* You must have your textbook, The American Vision with you everyday. Random
book checks will occur for pop quiz grades, so be prepared.
1 ½” to 2” hardcover binder
5 Dividers labeled: Vocabulary, Notes, Study guides, Classwork/Homework,
Miscellaneous
Colored Pencils or crayons
Pens (blue, black, or purple) and #2 pencils. No RED!!
Loose-leaf paper (you will need plenty, so stock up--lots of trees will die
this semester)
Other supplies may be needed. I will notify you in plenty of time to obtain
them.
* Missing any materials, including your book, on any day may result in ASD.
This is your warning.
Respect
* Simply by being the teacher and adult in the room, I command respect. I
will not tolerate otherwise.
* Show respect to yourself, your classmates and to any adult in this classroom
(this especially includes a substitute).
* Raise your hand to speak and refrain from interrupting others.
Class Participation
* Every student should make the supreme effort to participate in classroom
discussions, question and answer sessions, or any other activity that is
taking place. This leads to success for a large part of your grade. You will
receive
a grade on class participation.
* Refusal to do work will not be tolerated.
Other Routines and Expectations
o Always sit in your assigned seat.
o Your average class period will run like the following:
? Work on Vocabulary
? Receive notes and lecture on the content of the day
? Complete a group or individual activity on the content
? Occasionally, you will watch a film or documentary on the topics discussed
in class---this is a privilege and will not occur if a class has behavior
problems.
o Do not stand near to, adjacent to, or in the vicinity of the doorway. Come
inside, sit down, and begin the vocabulary. You will not be able to hang
out and chat until the bell rings. You need to be in your seat before the
bell
rings.
o You are responsible for your belongings.
o Homework goes in the tray before the bell rings. Points are deducted for
late work. Work is considered late after I have collected the work from the
tray. Not there=late and point deduction.
o Cheating will result in three things—1. 5 days detention after school
2. A phone call home and 3. An administrative referral. Cheating will follow
you in your permanent record.
o Format for heading paper: Name, Date, Period in the upper right hand corner.
Name should be the first thing you write.
o Don’t write in the books or put tape on them. Damage or loss of this
book may result in fines up to $55. I will charge it.
o Trash goes in the trashcan, not in your desk or on the floor.
o Only water is allowed in class. No food or drink.
o Follow the dress code.
o When writing, discussing, or doing anything in class for an assignment,
refrain from profanity, drug glorification, and sexual inferences. The ability
to write
in proper English and at/above grade level is a must in our society. Therefore,
expect to write a lot and be critiqued on all elements of writing style.
It is imperative that you know and learn MLA format for citing sources in
your
research. This eliminates many questions regarding plagiarism.
o Emergencies don’t occur regularly. Therefore, you may not leave class
daily to get other business handled. Each situation will be handled on a
case-by-case basis.
o Accepting late work is also on a case-by-case basis. All late work will
not be accepted. The teacher determines whether an excuse is acceptable or
not.
o Tests are final. No re-takes are permitted. Study the first time!!!!
