Ms. Funderburg, 2007-2008
Description: This course is an elective class divided into two social science categories. Sociology is the study of human behavior and connection between individuals and society. Psychology is the study of human development and personality. Psychology provides a way to cope with any uncertainties in human behavior. We will be covering Psychology through the first half of the semester and Sociology during the latter half!
Expectations : Follow all class rules (as displayed in room) & school/county policies.
****Number 1 Rule: Be respectful of your fellow students and me. Disrespect is not tolerated in any form or fashion. Respect includes doing your assignments, being on time, staying alert, and participating in class. Remember too: I am the teacher and you are the student. I make the decisions; that is the bottom line.
Supplies : **Lots of paper (we’ll kill a couple of trees)--spiral notebook is fine
**Composition notebook for journal
(no binders, or homemade notebooks for this)
**1 folder—preferably red, pink, or orange (something in that family)
** Pens & pencils
Textbooks : Sociology and You and Psychology
Note: Textbooks will be left in the classroom and can be checked out daily for use at home. This may be necessary for work on a project, homework assignment, or to study for tests and quizzes.
Class format : On a typical day, we will define vocabulary, identify important people, take daily notes, complete a class work assignment, and usually will watch a film relating to the unit at hand. The course is relatively fast paced. We will start with Psychology and discuss child, adolescent, and adult growth, the nervous system, emotions, memory, personality, intelligence, and psychological disorders. After the mid-term, we will complete the Sociology portion of the class and learn about culture, social movements, social institutions, collaborative behavior, group mentality, crime, and deviance.
You will also be keeping a journal in class. This will be a collection of your “deep thought” responses to questions I pose to you in class. The journal will be on going through both halves of the course. The journal entries will be placed in your red folder.
Furthermore, expect at least two major projects, which will account for a large percentage of your grade. We will go into detail with these when we get to it!
Grading :
Homework: 20% Class assignments/participation: 10% Journal: 20% Tests: 25% Projects: 25%
Special note from your teacher J : I am very excited about having you in this class. I love, love, love these topics and hope you will find the same appreciation and insight that I have regarding these subjects. My goal is for you to leave with a better understanding of why people are the way they are, why some can and cannot help it, and with an appreciation of our differences! Because believe me, we’re all different and we should laugh about our differences a little more!
